• The American Party (1972) is not the sames as the "Know Nothing" Party, which used the name "American Party" in some states.

Following the 1972 election, a faction of the American Independent Party separated and started the American Party. The American Party ran its own Presidential candidate in 1976 and 1980, the only two times its candidates received votes in California. It ceased to exist following the 1980 election.
