Special Election

Special Election to elect twenty-one* Delegates to a Convention Held in the State of California to Pass on the Amendment to the Constitution of the United States for the Repeal of the Eighteenth Amendment.

The delegates elected in this special election (officially called the “Convention in the State of California to Pass on the Amendment to the Constitution of the United States for the Repeal of the Eighteenth Amendment Thereof”) met on July 24, 1933 in Sacramento and ratified the 21st Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, ending prohibition.

* The number of delegates appears to have been set at 21 to provide one delegate for each of California's 20 Congressional districts, plus one to serve as a tie-breaker.
