Appointment Election
Appointment to fill the vacancy created by the failure of James W. Mandeville to take the office of State Controller following his appointment as U.S. Surveyor General. Appointment made by Governor John B. Weller. On January 26th, the State Senate delayed a hearing on the confirmation until the following day, and on January 27th, the Governor announced that he was withdrawing the nomination; "The nomination of Samiuel H. Brooks, Esq. to the office of Comptroller, having been made under a misapprehension of some material facts, is respectfully withdrawn." [1858 Senate Journal, p. 132]
