- During the First Battle of Pyramid Lake (the beginning of the Paiute War in Nevada), the residents of Honey Lake offered $150 to anyone who would warn the 80 men prospecting near Black Rock and Susanville. When nobody accepted the offer, Spencer (whose brother Luther was one of the prospectors) rode his horse for 36 hours without stopping to spread the warning and evacuate the camps.
