- Resulting in some confusion was a second prominent and political Samuel Merritt living in California at the same time. This other Merritt served as Mayor of Oakland (1867-1869) and had both Lake Merritt and Samuel Merritt University named for him.
- This Merritt was the first State Senator to represent Fresno County after it's incorporation.
