Samuel Augustus Merritt
Born: August 15, 1827 in Staunton, Virginia
Died: September 8, 1910 in Salt Lake City, Utah

1850: County Clerk and Public Administrator, Mariposa County
1858: President pro Tempore, California State Senate
1871-1873: Member, United States House of Representatives [Territory of Idaho]
1872: Candidate for Congress [Territory of Idaho] (Lost)
1888-1890: City Attorney, Salt Lake City [Utah]
1892: Member, Democratic National Committee
1894-1896: Chief Justice, Utah Territory Supreme Court

  • Resulting in some confusion was a second prominent and political Samuel Merritt living in California at the same time. This other Merritt served as Mayor of Oakland (1867-1869) and had both Lake Merritt and Samuel Merritt University named for him. 
  • This Merritt was the first State Senator to represent Fresno County after it's incorporation.
