- Fitzgerald was the acting Mayor of Oakland in the aftermath of the 1906 earthquake that destroyed San Francisco and he led efforts to assist the refugees of that destroyed city.
- In 1934, Fitzgerald ran for City Council on a slate with Edwin Meese, father of U.S. Attorney General Edwin Meese (1985-1988).
