- John G. Mattos Elementary [it is a misspelling] in Fremont is named for the longtime School District Boardmember. Centerville later became a part of the City of Fremont.
- Historical Note: The Azores were part of Portugal in the 1860s, but are now the "Autonomous Region of the Azores".
- Family Connection: During an introduction on the Senate Floor on June 24, 2024, Senator Henry Stern noted that he was half Portuguese (from the Azores) whose ancestors (the Mattos family) go "back to Hayward in the 1800s."
