- Graduated from the West Point Military Academy in 1841.
- His son Ambassador (and 1908 Republican candidate for Vice President) John Hays Hammond deserves further research as does Richard's grandson John H. Jr.. (an apprentice to Thomas Edison who worked with Nikola Tesla and invented remote control).
