Born: October 9, 1820 in Hagerstown, Maryland
Married: Sallie Lee (m. 1854, d. 1867)
Children: John H., Harry T., Richard P. Jr., Sallie T., Cornelia P., and Mary E.
Family: Brother in law of Confederate Brigadier General Harry T. Hays
Died: November 28, 1891 in San Francisco, CA

1850: Planned the town plots for Castoria [which became Manteca in 1918 ]
1852: Speaker, California State Assembly
1892: U.S. Presidential Elector

  • Graduated from the West Point Military Academy in 1841.
  • His son Ambassador (and 1908 Republican candidate for Vice President) John Hays Hammond deserves further research as does Richard's grandson John H. Jr.. (an apprentice to Thomas Edison who worked with Nikola Tesla and invented remote control).
