- After Assemblyman Daniel Showalter was captured while trying to flee California after killing Charles Piercy in a duel, it was Gorley, who as temporary commander of Camp Wright, received and detained Showalter as a prisoner.
- Gorley, then living in San Ramon, played a significant part in preserving the works of David Gilmour Blythe.
- He was traveled to Nicaragua and was part of the Private Army of William Walker for about a day before escaping and returning home.
