- Assemblyman Alter was the father of Herbert “Hobie" Alter, Jr. (born while his father was in the Assembly) who created the 'Hobie surf board" which was made out of foam and fiberglass, as well as the highly successful "Hobie cat" line of sailboats. Hobie's company was started in the garage of the family home at 34195 Coast Highway in Dana Point.
