- In May 1962, Coughlin was the judge who convicted Assemblyman Charles Edward Chapel of a misdemeanor charge of "falsely reporting a bomb on an airliner" after jokingly telling a stewardess that he had a revolver and nitroglycerine in his briefcase at Sacramento Municipal Airport.
