  • At 15, Shine ran away from home to serve with the 53rd Illinois Regiment in the Civil War.
  • Shine was the driver of the first stagecoach to be robbed by notable outlaw Black Bart on July 26, 1875. Black Bart stole $160 in that robbery at Funk Hill (near Copperopolis).
