  • NOTABLE HISTORY: In the 2008 General Election, Gaines was elected with 166,736 votes, which set the record for the highest number of votes received by a State Assemblymember until Tony Thurmond received 189,530 votes in 2016.
  • Be Fruitful and Multiply: Gaines has six children.
  • ON THE BALLOT TWICE: Because he was a candidate for reelection to AD-04 and a special election candidate for State Senate in SD-01, Gaines appeared twice on the November 2010 ballot. In this election, he was reelected to the Assembly, but the Senate Special Election moved to a January run-off.
  • FULL HOUSE DROUGHT: The longest period without a floor session that all members attended (all 80 Assemblymembers and all 40 Senators) was 7 years and 11 months between July 10, 2007 and June 1, 2015. Gaines was the presiding officer of the Senate on the day that the drought ended.
  • NATURAL DISASTER (WILDFIRE): The deadliest wildfire in California history (the Camp Fire in November 2018) occured within the districts represented by State Senator Ted Gaines and the Assemblyman Brian Dahle.
