Family: Son of Asaph R. Nichols (Maine Secretary of State, 1835-1837)

- It was Nichols who, as Secretary of State, climbed on top of the cupola (at the top of the dome) of the State Capitol and attached the golden-plated sphere (it was made with melted-down gold coins over copper).
