  • NOTABLE HISTORY: The first African American California legislator.
  • Since 2017, the California Legislative Black Caucus has offered the Frederick M. Roberts College Scholarship to assist deserving students by offering financial assistance to help meet educational expenses.
  • Roberts lost the 1952 Primary (in a contest that included both former Lt. Governor Ellis Patterson and incumbent Congressman Sam Yorty on June 3rd and died about six weeks later.
