- According to California Place Names by Erwin G. Gudde, it was Walthall who proposed the name "Shasta County."
- Moreno's Dictionary of Spanish-named California makes the following note about Shasta County; "Upon the subdivision of the State into counties Mr. Walthall, member of the Assembly of the delegation from the district of Sacramento; proposed this name for the county, and it was adopted by the Legislature. The mountain has likewise been named."
- Walthall was died after falling from a windmill in Stockton.
